Learning outcomes

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Set up a computer for Gaelic - with keyboard, spell-checker, Gaelic software, browser language, fonts, options and resources suitable for writing in Gaelic and using where possible a Gaelic interface.
  2. Demonstrate a knowledge of Unicode, UTF-8 (and other encodings) and of the various methods for entering characters on computers.
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge of standards for language codes (e.g. “gd” or “gla” for Gaelic), and of the codes and special requirements for various languages, in particular the other Celtic languages.
  4. Demonstrate a knowledge of the range of resources available for Gaelic on the Internet, including: software for download (e.g. Firefox, Opera); general resources (e.g. Wikipedia, ODP); resources particular to Gaelic (e.g. Tobar an Dualchais, Am Baile); bulletin boards and other fora; and online dictionaries.
  5. Make use of and make advanced searches in dictionaries and other resources.
  6. Create and edit articles in the Gaelic Wikipedia.
  7. Demonstrate an awareness of the different possible architectures for a multilingual website.
  8. Understand and use Gaelic computing terminology
