Éamonn 'ac Grianna (1899–1982) of Loch an Iubhair, Annaghery, Co Donegal

According to the information recorded on the Doegen speaker questionnaire in September 1931, Éamonn 'ac Grianna was born in Rann na Fearsaide, and was aged 30 at the time of recording. His father was a farmer from Rann na Fearsaide and his mother was from Anagaire. In response to questions, he stated that he had lived in Rann na Fearsaide until the age of 20; since then, apart from one season in Scotland, he had lived in Loch an Iubhair. He had attended primary school in Rann na Fearsaide. His occupation was given as a farmer. Irish was his mother language, and he could also speak English. He could read and write both languages.

The speaker's parents were Frainc Dhomhnaill Phroinnsiais (c1856–1937/12/21), a brother of Doegen speaker Feidhlimidh 'ac Grianna (qv); and Róise
Pheadair Eoin Ní Dhubhthaigh (c1861–1956/06/09) from Anagaire. They married about 1892, and had the following family: In 1901, the household consisted of Frank 45, a farmer; Rose 36; Dan 7, Peter 5, Bridget 4, Mary 3 and Edward 1. The three youngest children had Irish only, while the rest of the family were bilingual. In 1911, there were Frank 55, Rose 50, Peter 19, Bridget 17, Mary 15, Edward 13, John 11 and Sarah 9. All were bilingual. The marriage had taken place 22 years earlier, and the seven children were all living. At Anagaire on 20/12/1934, Neidí Frainc married Treasa John Chiot Ní Chonaill (1910/09/18–2004/07/02) from Leitir Catha. Their children were: |
According to Pádraig Ó Baoighill, after leaving school, Neidí went to work as migrant labourer 'ar an Lagán' — in Glenlark, Plumbridge and Drumquin. He then worked three seasons in Scotland, after which he and his brothers bought a small farm in Loch an Iubhair. When he married, the couple went to live in Neidí's home place. They had a large family, but only four sons and four daughters survived until adulthood. Neidí was a seanchaidhe at Coláiste Bhrighde, and gained the storytelling prize at the Oireachtas several times. He was one of those who participated in the Oícheanta Seanchais in the Damer Hall in Dublin. He was a member of Aisteoirí Rann na Feirste. Neidí Frainc died on 26/01/1982 and is buried at Anagaire.
