A FANTASTIC NEW FACILITY FOR SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG

Following on from the UHI Annual Lecture, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig continued the celebrations with the opening of its new community outdoor performance space, An Amharclann. Funded by Calor Alba (Calor Gas) the impressive new amphitheatre was built using local stone and Caithness Flagstone and includes outdoor heaters, state of the art lighting and an incredible Calor Gas Midge Magnet! The opening ceremony was marked by performances from the Northern Constabulary Pipeband, pupils from Bunsgoil Shlèite and students of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

Opening the new facility, Mr Pat Kennedy, Director of SHV Holdings N.V., the parent group of gas supplier Calor said:
"Calor Scotland is delighted to have helped facilitate the development of this unique theatre space. And it is wonderful that we are witnessing such a diverse range of performances today, as this reflects perfectly, the community role of the amphitheatre.

I sincerely hope that the amphitheatre will become an attractive, but functional landmark, which will be used not only by the college, but by the whole community. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is the national centre for the Gaelic language, culture and the Arts, and I am sure that the College's team will promote its use to groups throughout the whole of Skye and beyond."

The official opening was followed by another wonderful recital from Micheal O Suilleabhain of the Irish World Music Centre and an evening of music from both Scotland and Ireland, sponsored by Iomairt Cholm Cille.
