SKYE STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM GAELIC BURSARIES

This year, UHI Millennium Institute, in partnership with Highland Council and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, has awarded six bursaries, each worth £1000, to UHI students entering their first year of study on one of the UHI Gaelic medium programmes. Four of the bursaries are funded jointly by Highland Council and UHI, and two funded jointly by Western Isles Council and UHI.
Two of the successful students are studying at Inverness College UHI, two are based at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI in Sleat and two are from Lews Castle College in Stornoway. All of the students come from one of three UHI courses, CertHE Cursa Comais, BA (Hons) Gaelic and North Atlantic Studies or BA (Hons) Gaelic Language and Culture.
Applicants from across the Highland and Islands completed forms in the hope of being awarded a grant, which would help them in purchasing required texts and equipment for their course as well as helping with living expenses.
Chair of the bursaries board Jean Urquhart said,
"In these financially challenging times, the £1000 awards will make a huge difference to these deserving students. Recipients of the Gaelic bursaries will go on to become the Gaelic teachers, writers, broadcasters and influencers of the future. UHI and the two Councils see the bursaries scheme as a modest investment that could bring benefits in future to the development of Gaelic language and culture in Scotland."
