Sabhal Mòr Ostaig celebrated its student's success last Friday when its Graduation 2000 took place at Arainn Chaluim Chille, the Saint Columba Campus in Sleat. This year's proceedings were especially significant with six students graduating for the first time with B.A.'s in Gaelic, under the auspices of the University of the Highlands and Islands. John Norman MacLeod, the Head of Academic Studies congratulated the students on their achievements, "we're very proud of all the students............their hard work and diligence has contributed greatly to the College's reputation" and went on to wish them future success, "they now have the opportunity to become leaders in their new careers and to use their knowledge and experience in the communities where they settle".

This new academic year sees more students than ever enrolled at the College, and invited speaker Mr Alec MacDonald, Convenor of the Western Isles Council spoke on the important role of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig within Gaelic-medium education.

A special mention was also given to Iona MacDonald, the Academic Secretary who graduated with a B.A. from the Open University, and to the College Director Dr Norman Gillies who was earlier this year awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Aberdeen.
