SUCCESSFUL SHORT COURSE FOR HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS

High school pupils from throughout Scotland came to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig last week to participate in ‘Seachdain nan Sgoilearan’, a new short course that was designed to encourage those taking Higher Gaelic (Learners).

There was 18 pupils in attendance altogether from Portree, Lochaber, Perth, Inverness and Dingwall. They participated in both language and drama classes to improve their listening and speaking skills, which was no mean feat after 6 weeks off from school!

Above and beyond their classes they also worked on a film project for the new Gaelic film competition, “Film G”. The students recorded and performed their films on Thursday afternoon, with support from Cànan, the company managing the Film G project. The films were then screened at a special graduation ceremony on Friday afternoon.

Chris Deplano, Short Course Co-ordinator at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig said;

“The students had an incredibly successful week and they all did really well with both their Gaelic skills and their film project. It was clear they all had an interest in the language and they were more than willing to participate in all the activities."

"We were very happy with how the course went and because of this; we hope to develop the course further next year.”

The week-long course was supported by Bòrd na Gàidhlig and this was the first time that Sabhal Mòr Ostaig had piloted such a course. It is anticipated that the course will now be a permanent fixture on the short course programme.
