SPECIAL AWARD FOR ISLAND VOICES

The Lifelong Learning team at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig are celebrating a European Award for Languages for their project, Island Voices (Guthan nan Eilean). The project consists of a series of bilingual videos portraying modern Island life and was created as a language resource for Gaelic learners which have evolved into an invaluable resource for both teachers and students.

Guthan nan Eilean was created in conjunction with the “Leonardo POOLS Project”, a two year scheme aimed at developing materials for language learning and effective teaching based on pools of materials for nine different languages. These languages include; Basque, Lithuanian, Romanian, Spanish, as well as Gaelic.
Gordon Wells, the project co-ordinator in Scotland, has produced many of the videos with in his local community in Uist.

Gordon said, “The Island Voices project aims to reflect the naturalness of bilingual life and work in the Hebrides. The project could not have succeeded without full community participation and it’s wonderful to have everyone’s contribution recognised through this award.”

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig will receive their accolade at a prestigious ceremony on the 20th of November, at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. It is one of only three projects in Scotland that will receive an award this year.
