Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Student for President!

Lindsay Mitchell, a Sabhal Mòr Ostaig student, has been voted Student President for the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). She is the first Gaelic speaker to undertake the role and will spend the year representing students all across the network.

A former Nicolson Institute pupil and a very talented singer, Lindsay has always had a keen interest in Gaelic language and culture. She came to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig last year to study on the Immersion course and is currently in her second year of the Gaelic and Traditional Music degree.

Lindsay said, “I am really looking forward to the year that is ahead of me. I was involved with the University of the Highlands and Island Students Association (UHISA) as the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig representative last year and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I originally came to Sabhal Mòr as I was interested in traditional music and Gaelic song and I wanted to develop my fluency. I am now hoping that I’ll be able to encourage students throughout UHI and also promote the language.”

Lindsay has already been an invaluable member of the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig student body and received a prize in her first year for progression in the language. She worked on the Short Course Programme last year and most recently sung for the First Minister at the Fàs opening earlier this month.

John Norman MacLeòid, Director of Studies said, “We are very proud that a student from SMO has been elected to this important role within UHI for next year. We wish her well and we are certain that she will be a worthy representative for students throughout UHI and that she will further generate interest and participation in student matters, including advancing the interest in Gaelic and in other cultural opportunities.”

Lindsay will begin her new post in July and will remain on campus at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig throughout the year.
