SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG WELL REPRESENTED AT MÒD NAN EILEAN SIAR 2005

Students and staff from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig were once more to the fore at this year's Royal National Mod, which was held in Stornoway.

Sabhal Mòr supported two competitions for teenagers which were won by pupils from Skye and Inverness, and students and staff from the college took part in several competitions at the Mod. The college also had a stall at the Mod's Trade Fair throughout the week where people could find out more about what the college has to offer.

Anne Marie MacRae from Portree High School won the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Silver Medal for her recitation of the poem 'A' Choille' in the learners 13-15 age group, and Michael Malone from Sgoil a' Mheadhain in Inverness won the second Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Silver Medal for the fluent speakers 13-15 age group competition where entrants had to conduct a conversation with the adjudicator on a subject of the competitor's choice. This is the second year that Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has supported the two competitions. The college's Marketing Officer Fiona Dunn followed up on her Silver Pendant success of last year for solo singing when she won the Oban Times Gold Medal on Wednesday in Stornoway.

Commenting on the Mod, Ms Dunn said: "I think it is important for Sabhal Mòr Ostaig to continue to support Gaelic-speaking children and we congratulate Anna Marie and Michael on their success. I thought Mòd nan Eilean Siar was very successful and we are already looking forward to next year in Dunoon."

Five students from Sabhal Mòr took part in Mòd competitions, and two of them received 'gold' awards for their spoken Gaelic. As well as being represented in the Gold Medal and Traditional competitions, Sabhal Mòr also made its usual contribution to the Television and Radio coverage of the Mod with seven Media students from the college helping BBC Scotland with their coverage of the event.
