SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT CABINET VISITS SABHAL MÒR OSTAIG
Tha Scottish Government Cabinet visited Sabhal Mòr Ostaig as part of their tour of Scotland on 25/26 August.
The event commenced with the First Minister’s Reception for Good Causes where representatives had been invited from local voluntary groups, the Highland Council and other local businesses to get the chance to speak with the First Minister and Cabinet Secretaries about local issues.
The Cabinet and guests enjoyed a musical showcase of songs and tunes written especially for their visit by some of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig’s musical staff and local musicians Mairi and Steafanaidh Campbell, including a song written for the First Minister by Myles Campbell, Writer in Residence.
The Cabinet Meeting was held the following morning in the spectacular Macintosh Room, named after Sabhal Mòr’s previous Chairman of Trustees, the late Dr Farquhar Macintosh, in the new Fàs centre for creative and cultural industries.
A public meeting about the “National Conversation” followed where the Cabinet were questioned for some 45 minutes on a wide range of issues from the roads to voluntary group funding; crofting to wind farms.
The event concluded in a buffet lunch where guests had the opportunity to speak one-to-one with the Cabinet Secretaries.
The event was a wonderful opportunity to showcase all that goes on at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture. The Cabinet Secretaries then headed their separate ways to other events on the island including Columba 1400 and Bunsgoil Shlèite.
