ISLAND VOICES: SERIES TWO UNDERWAY

Ideas and suggestions are being sought from residents of the Hebrides on aspects of island life and work that could be presented in video format to introduce newcomers to island life, and learn either Gaelic or English - or both!

Following their success in winning a 2007 European Award for Languages for their bilingual “Island Voices” series of films for language learners, the Hebridean partnership led by Skye-based Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and Uist-based Cothrom Ltd have secured funding to start the production of a second series. Topics in Series One were diverse, and covered care for people with special needs, food preparation and handling, book and furniture recycling, as well as music and art in Uist.

The videos are all online at www.languages.dk/digital, and are free to download and use. Although the topics and locations are all island-based the take-up has been much wider, with interest coming from language teachers and learners across Scotland and beyond.

The project co-ordinator is Gordon Wells, who works in Benbecula. He is keen to incorporate new environmental themes in particular in Series Two, and wants to hear from anyone in Skye or the Western Isles who would like to suggest a topic for filming. Gordon can be contacted by e-mail at info@gordonwells.co.uk, or by phone on 07879 644984. The project is supported by funding from the Scottish Executive, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
