Fios: Nicholas Zair (Reflexes of the PIE Laryngeals in Celtic, pp. 182-183) regards the etymology of Irish caill and Welsh/Cornish celli/kelli as problematic, but suggests (per Dilts & Joseph) that they may come from a PIE *kl-n-h2- (which could develop into *callī in Brittonic and Proto-Irish). I think the Welsh and Cornish forms in -i must have an additional suffix (-īma, -īsa, et al.) not found in the Irish form. --CGwinn IPA: |
