sirid
Dearbh:
Cànan: Sengoídelc
Gram: [v]
Fios: Connection with spyrian far from certain. See LÉIA, which says it is from root ser- ‘flow’. --CPD | Length of 1st syll unclear, also attested as sírid. If sirid, prps from PIE *serh₃- "to approach so. (in hostile way)"? But zero-grade *sr̥h₃i̯eti (> **sairid) expected not full-grade *serh₃ei̯eti; unlikely from PIE *serp- "to crawl" (should prob. have given PC *serφ- > OIr. **serr-). In meaning "to traverse, extend over, spread" prps from *sper- "to spread, strew"; but none of these possibilities explains weak inflection in OIr. Maybe two different verbs sirid & sírid (< sír "long, far")? Prps related to sirem "mite, tick" (i.e. "wanderer, crawler") and sirite "some supernatural being; imp". --DS
