Dearbh: Cànan: Proto-Celtic Gram: [n] |
Fios: From PIE *h₁eni-sth₂-ih₂ (literally “that which stands in (the water)”), from *h₁en (“in”) + *steh₂- (“stand”). --Wikt | The etymology *eni-st-ī < *(h₁)eni-sth₂-ih₂ is morphologically perfect. It could, at worst, be called 'uncertain', insofar as it involves a good deal of conjecture (since ynys, inis could be accounted for by other proto-forms as well, such as *inessī, etc., see above), and the internal laryngeal is not directly arrested. [But a comarison with] Latin īnsula or Greek nāsos is completely in the fog (no sound rules, no reason for the differences). --RV IPA: |
