Ann an 1881 agus 1891 Census Canada chaidh Iain MacBeathain (John MacBain) a chlàradh a bha ag obair mar neach-cumail-leabhraichean ann am bùth-coitcheann . Ged a tha aois Iain MacBeathain a bhathar a' sgrìobhadh ann an 1881 Census Canada ceàrr (chlàr iad fichead bliadhna 's a sia a dh'aois ged a rugadh Iain MacBeathain ann an 8mh an t-Sultain 1830 , 's mar sin bha e leth-cheud bliadhna 's a h-aon a dh'aois ann an 1881), tha mise a dh'aindeoin sin den bheachd gum b' e athair Alasdair MacBeathain a bh' ann a chaidh a chlàradh thall an sin aig an àm sin. Tha adhbharan mo cho-dhùnaidh mar a leanas:
Tha fios againn bho Scotland Census, mar eisimpleir, nach rachadh bliadhnaichean-bhreith no aoisean nan daoine a chlàradh ceart an-còmhnaidh agus gu bheil iad measaichte gu math tric. Chan eil teagamh sam bith agam gun do thachair an dearbh sìon ann an Canada Censuses an-dràsta 's a -rithist, gu h-àraidh a thaobh aois is bliadhna-bhreith. Chì sinn e ann an dithis 1891 Censuses den sgìre Ontario, ceàrn 53 (i.e. Bruce West), fo-chèarn Lucknow. Chaidh aon dhiubh a chlàradh ann an 5mh an Cèitean 1891 agus chaidh fear eile a chlàradh ann an 14mh an Cèitean 1891. Chaidh Iain MacBeathain a chlàradh ann an aon dhiubh le leth-cheud bliadhna is naoi a dh'aois agus ann am fear eile chaidh a chlàradh le trì fichead bliadhna a dh'aois. Ach tha an dithis a' clàradh Iain MacBeathain à Alba, dreuchd: neach-cumail-leabhraichean ann am bùth-coitcheann.
Ann an 1881 Census chaidh Bruce South a chlàradh mar cheàrn an àite Bruce West ach tha an sgìre, siud Ontario agus am fo-chèarn, siud Lucknow, co-ionnan ris an sgìre is ris an fho-cheàrn bho na 1891 Censuses. Chaidh dreuchd Iain MacBeathain a chlàradh mar neach-cumail-leabhraichean, direach mar a rachadh a clàradh sna clàraidhean bho na 1891 Censuses. Agus tha taisbeanar eile ann a tha ag innse dhuinn gum bi sinn a' dèiligeadh ris an dearbh dhuine: Cha deach MacBeathain sam bith eile a chlàradh ann an sgìre Ontario, fo-cheàrn Lucknow (chan eil ann an aon chuid 1881 no 1891 Censuses). Leis an fhiosrachadh ud agus leis an fhiosrachadh a fhuair sinn bho Alasdair fhèin gun deach athair a Ameireaga a Tuath, Lucknow, gus a dh'obair airson Donald Campbell aig an robh bùth mòr agus oifis a' phuist, tha e na fianais gu leòr dhomh gun robh Iain MacBeathain, a chaidh a chlàradh sna 1881 agus 1891 Canada Censuses, na neach-cumail-leabhraichean, ag obair ann an bùth-coitcheann ann an Lucknow, athair aig Alasdair. Tha mi den bheachd gun robh ìre de dh’fhoghlam aig Iain MacBeathain agus gun robh Beurla aige oir chan fhaigheadh e an obair thall thairis mura biodh seòrsa de dh’fhoghlam aige. Tha gràbhaladh leac-uaige teaghlach MacBeathain a’ dearbhadh sin cuideachd oir thathar a’ sgrìobhadh thall an sin gun robh Iain MacBeathain na neach-teagaisg (sgoil Didòmhnaich) ann an Lucknow. A rèir coltais cha robh athair Alasdair MacBeathain “na sgalag chumanta”. Agus tha siud a’ toirt rud beag mìneachadh dhuinn bho chùl-eachdraidh-beatha phearsanta aig Alasdair air ciamar a b’ urrainn dha a dh’èirich na sgoilear air leth a bh’ ann.

English:
A John MacBain from Scotland is registered in the 1881 and 1891 Census Canada, who worked as a bookkeeper in a general store . Though the age of John MacBain, as given in the 1881 Census Canada with 46 years, doesn’t correspond to his real age at that time (John MacBain was born on the 8th August 1830 , thus he was 51 years old in 1881), I nevertheless think, that it is Alexander MacBains father, who was registered then. The reasons for my conclusion are as followed:
We know from the Scotland Censuses, for example, that birth years and ages are not always documented correctly and that they are often estimated. I have no doubt that the same phenomenon happened now and again in the Canada Censuses, especially with regard to age and birth year, as we can see in two of the 1891 Censuses of the Province Ontario, District 53 (i.e. Bruce West), Subdistrict Lucknow, one dated 5th May 1891 the other 14th May 1891, one given the age of John MacBain with 59 years, the other with 60 years, both documenting a John MacBain from Scotland, occupation: general store bookkeeper. In the 1881 Census the district given is Bruce South instead of Bruce West, but the province, namely Ontario and the subdistrict, namely Lucknow, is the same. The occupation of a John MacBain (from Scotland) is registered as bookkeeper, just as in the documents of the 1891 Censuses. Another indicator that we're dealing with the same man is the fact that in each register (either 1881 or 1891) there is no other MacBain listed in the Province of Ontario, Subdistrict Lucknow. This and the information we got from Alexander that his father went to North America, Lucknow, to work for a Donald Campbell who had a large store and post office is evidence enough for me to conclude that the John MacBain, registered in the 1881 and 1891 Canada Censuses as a bookkeeper for a general store in Lucknow, was Alexander MacBain's father, who, I guess, he must have had some degree of education and knowledge of the English language to get the job he got yonder. This is further confirmed by the inscription of the family-gravestone in Rothiemurchus, which states that John MacBain was a Sunday School Teacher in Lucknow. Thus we got one missing link of Alexander MacBain’s personal background-biography with regard to the question of how he could develop himself to such an exceptional scholar. Apparently, his father was more than just a “common farm servant”.

Note: Tha am fiosrachadh ud - 's e gun do thadhail Iain MacBeathain air an t-seann dùthaich ochd bliadhna roimhe - gu math inntinneach oir tha siud a' ciallachadh gun robh e ann an Alba airson leac-uaighe an teaghlaich aige a chur air chois ann an 1883. ’S mar sin tha e gu math coltach gun do choinnich Alasdair ri athair a-rithist.
