Note: “In April he received a message from his mother telling him not to leave Britain, and a week later his father arrived in Edinburgh to persuade him to return to Russia. He must have succeeded, because although Heinrich had just matriculated at the University of Edinburgh, he nevertheless bought a ticket from Leith to Russia by steamer. This steamer was delayed by a boiler explosion. While he was waiting, Heinrich got an urgent telegram from his mother, telling him to wait for an important letter. When the letter came, it revealed that his father had revealed to some relatives that he intended not to let Heinrich leave Russia ever again. Heinrich refused to leave Scotland – he couldn’t be extradited from Britain to Russia, but felt unsafe, even in Edinburgh. He went to Rothesay in the Isle of Bute for a short holiday in August – the Marquess of Bute, who owned much of the island, was an ardent Catholic. There he read in the Catholic Directory about a new Benedictine Abbey recently founded in Fort Augustus in the middle of the Highlands” -- Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart |
